Four Temple University students are the new winners of the 2014 Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge, a competition that began in January with 15 universities. Each team was presented with a risk management situation—a case study provided by Dan Kugler, the now retired risk manager for Snap-on Inc., and newly hired director of the Center of Risk Management-and Insurance at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Each team was asked to make a presentation to “win” Snap-on’s broker business.

The teams submitted written papers prior to the Denver RIMS conference and the field was narrowed to nine schools. During the conference, the nine schools made oral presentations to a panel of 10 judges and three schools were named finalists: Temple University, Florida State University and Virginia Commonwealth University. Those finalists presented one last time in front of risk professionals at the conference.

The second-place winner of the challenge was Florida State University and the third-place team was Virginia Commonwealth University.

Kugler noted, “It was exciting to see a large contingent of colleges participating. This is like the Super Bowl for risk management and insurance! The RIMS conference was a great place for the students to demonstrate their abilities, and I only can see this competition growing. I was very pleased with how they analyzed Snap-on in a broad case study.”

Cathleen Gabriel, a senior from Temple University, a member of the winning team and one of 35 students who competed in the challenge said, “Looking back at my academic career, I never expected to compete and present on a national level.” She described working with teammates Martin Leicht, Steven Costa and William Thorsson as “an amazing experience in itself. I am very excited for each of our respective professional careers, especially after I have seen the work ethic and quality of each person.

Two weeks shy of graduation, competing and winning the Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge is a tremendous way to end a remarkable college career!” The team’s academic adviser was Michael McClosky.

Brion Callori, the newly-elected chairman of the Spencer Educational Foundation, said, “We are pleased to have provided RIMS with a grant to hold the risk management challenge. The competition showcased the knowledge, skills and abilities of tomorrow’s industry leaders and at the same time, provided the participants with a tremendous learning opportunity. The students from all 15 schools were well-prepared and insightful, and we congratulate Temple University on winning this distinguished competition.”

RIMS Executive Director Mary Roth said the Challenge is “an engaging way to showcase the brilliant minds of these future industry leaders.” In addition to providing students with a platform to show off their risk management talents, the competition “is also a reminder to established professionals at our conference about the importance of supporting the next generation of risk professionals.”

“In the past, all major institutions had training programs for new hires that covered important issues like risk management,” said St. Francis College President Brendan J. Dugan. “But now, students need to come to the recruiters with all of these skills under their belt.

This grant will help us prepare them.”

Through the grant, St. Francis College’s School of Business plans to create eight risk management modules. The first four modules, targeted for the school’s entry-level management program, are designed to:

• Introduce the concept of insurance and risk management and its importance to an enterprise

• Deal with sophisticated concepts regarding types of insurance, providers and regulation

• Discuss how the financial performance of insurers is measured and the scope of insurance operations including marketing, underwriting and claims

• Highlight careers in the industry

“Over the summer, we will be developing the first set of modules,” said Allen Burdowski, Ph. D., dean for academic programs and development. “These will be introduced in the fall 2014 semester to our entry-level management majors. The second set of four modules will be offered the following year.”

The latter set will target upper level management and finance courses and focus on insurance contracts and loss exposures, advanced risk management, an introduction to life and personal lines insurance and an introduction to commercial insurance.

Spencer Educational Foundation Chairwoman Peggy Accordino noted, “Today, we take the next step to increase the knowledge and information available about our industry. We look forward to working with St.

At its recent annual gala, the Spencer Educational Foundation raised a record $870,000 from leaders of the risk management industry. The dinner also drew its largest crowd yet to honor Zurich’s Michael Kerner and Ryan Specialty Group’s Patrick Ryan.

Kerner lauded the foundation while encouraging colleagues in the insurance industry to embrace and prioritize the role of younger entrants to the field. “We struggle as an industry with reputation, unfortunately,” he said. “To this day, for most people that get into the business, it wasn’t necessarily their childhood dream to be in insurance. We don’t do a good enough job as an industry in promoting the value that we bring to the economy and to business on the whole, or the exciting and fun careers you can have in the insurance space.”

Dedicated to aiding future risk managers, the Spencer Educational Foundation awards scholarships in risk management and insurance, runs student internship programs and issues grants to facilitate risk management course development at schools across the country. As of this year, according to Chairwoman Peggy Accordino, the foundation has awarded over $5 million to students.

Applications for 2014 Spencer Scholars, internships, and the Risk Manager in Residence program are now live, with scholarship applications due by January 31. Applications for employers to participate in the student internship program are also available, with a deadline of February 14.

Spencer Educational Foundation Reaches $5 Million Milestone

Yesterday, at the RIMS 2013 Annual Conference & Exhibition, the Spencer Educational Foundation announced it hit $5 million in donations since the organization’s inception in 1979. The latest round of funding secured $282,500 worth of scholarships to 50 risk management and insurance students from 19 universities.

“This allows us to touch the lives of students who will eventually be the leaders of risk management,” said John Phelps, RIMS President.

Peggy Accordino, Spencer chairwoman, announced that the organization will use the $300,000 donated by RIMS to promote the establishment of risk management and insurance courses at schools around the country. “We would like to have RMI courses be as commonplace as accounting, statistics, marketing — all those subjects that are needed for business,” she said.

Additionally, Temple University was awarded a $50,000 loss prevention education grant funded by FM Global.
